TCEA Announces Winners of the 2018 3D Design Contest

TCEA is pleased to announce the winners of our second annual 3D Design Contest. For the 2018 contest, teams of students used the Engineering Design Process and 3D design software to create an invention to solve a real-world problem related to weather. The competition was open to students in grades 6-12 divided into two levels: Intermediate (grades 6-8) and Advanced (grades 9-12). In addition to submitting their final design, each team also submitted a logbook detailing their process and a presentation marketing their creation.

From a grass-planting stake to help prevent erosion after hurricanes to a more efficient wind turbine, the submissions demonstrated incredible creativity, collaboration, and critical thinking. The winners in each category and the names of their designs are below:

Intermediate

TCEA Executive Director Lori Gracey congratulated all of the winners and participants, saying: “I was blown away by the entries in this year’s contest. These students demonstrated real ingenuity and engineering thinking in researching, developing, and prototyping their ideas. They are truly considering ways to solve the world’s problems and transform our future.”

TCEA is a nonprofit, member-based organization that has supported the use of technology in education for the last 38 years. Our primary focus is on integrating technology into the PreK-16 environment and providing our members with cutting-edge knowledge and resources through conferences, workshops, online and print publications, and collaborations with higher education and business.
