You’ll learn how to set up and manage a computer lab for K–5 students, while exploring key topics such as digital citizenship, keyboarding, and coding. The course is ideal not only for “specials” or elective teachers but also for classroom teachers seeking to integrate technology across all subjects.

Course Modules

Preparation and Organization: Before you even have students enter your room, you need to plan a few things. Your class will run more smoothly if you have a system in place for seating, saving student work, logging in, and knowing what to do when the technology does not work. In this module, you will discover the tools to start your computer class organized and prepared instead of scattered and scared.

Digital Fluency and Citizenship: Digital citizenship is being responsible with all the knowledge available in the digital world. In this module, you will explore the tools to teach students to be respectful, responsible, safe, and confident in the digital world.

Keyboarding and Word Processing: Keyboarding is not the most exciting thing for kids, but it is a very important skill needed to use technology successfully. In this module, you will explore some tips and tricks to teach keyboarding skills to your elementary students in an engaging and relevant way.

Computer Science and Coding: Computer science and coding in elementary school? It is actually an ideal time to introduce them to the concepts of computer science and computational thinking. This module will prepare you to teach the skills of solving complex problems by breaking them down into smaller parts.

Show What You Know: It is important to give students voice and choice to share what they have learned. In this module, you will explore a few creativity tools that can be used across all grades and subject areas to allow students options in demonstrating their understanding.
