This self-paced online course explores research-based strategies and engaging digital tools to support mathematics instruction for sixth through eighth-grade students. You’ll learn differentiated, student-centered practices and procedures, and explore key concepts such as Webb’s Depth of Knowledge to enhance learning across a variety of classroom situations.

Self-Paced Online Course

Effective Math: 6-8 is a self-paced, online program. Participants can begin anytime and go at their own speed throughout the program.

Upon enrollment, you will receive a program invitation email from TCEA’s learning management system that will give you access to the self-paced course. Within the course, you will find modules that must be moved through in sequential order.

 

Course Modules

Putting Students at the Center: Mathematics is often seen as a subject that is not for everyone, and either you get it or you don’t. Fostering a student-centered math classroom can help change that negative perspective, especially with the transition from elementary to secondary math. In this module, you will learn more about how to build a student-centered math classroom that promotes student growth.

Differentiating Math Instruction: Why is it important to differentiate instruction in math class? “Differentiation means tailoring instruction to meet individual needs. Whether teachers differentiate content, process, products, or the learning environment, the use of ongoing assessment and flexible grouping makes this a successful approach to instruction” (Source: Reading Rockets). What are some differentiating strategies and how are they implemented? In this module, you will explore why differentiated instruction is essential and discover the strategies and models that promote differentiated learning in mathematics.

Speaking Mathematically: Mathematics often involves highly-specialized vocabulary that students do not encounter daily. Acquiring math language can be even more difficult for English language learners. In this module, you will explore how to apply best practices to develop the mathematical vocabulary for all learners.

Thinking at All Levels: Is math difficult, or is it complex? Are students being cognitively challenged? In this module, you will understand Webb’s Depth of Knowledge (DOK) levels for mathematics and learn how to apply the levels to increase the complexity of instruction and learning in the math classroom.

Building Conceptual Understanding in Mathematics: How are we building relationships between mathematical ideas, patterns, and procedures? How visual is the math in the classroom? In this module, you will explore how visualizing mathematics can help improve performance and examine strategies and digital tools to increase the visibility of math in the classroom.
