Course Modules

Everyone Is a Math Person: Ever said “I’m just not a math person?” Or ever heard “Girls don’t do math?” Math courses come with a certain stigma that, if not addressed, can set our students down a path of math discomfort and anxiety. This module will address growth mindsets and their impact on math instruction.

Be a Sense Maker: Math is about patterns and relationships. But somehow we’ve morphed the discovery of math into the abstract nature of simply solving for an unknown. This module will explore the power of inquiry instruction in a math classroom and how to create a tangible math experience for our students.

Think Deeply, Not Quickly: Math anxiety is real. Our students feel it and even you may have felt it. There is a common misconception that to be good at math, you have to be fast at math. This module will provide strategies to help your students think deeply about math rather than quickly through the exploration of open, rich math tasks. We will wrap up by rethinking how our assessments can truly assess mathematical understanding.

Making Rough Drafts: We’ve seen rough drafts in English class, but what doors could be opened if we used rough drafts in math class? This module will explore how rough drafts can be used to offer students the chance to productively struggle while learning the impact of mathematical collaboration.

It’s Your Choice: Students come to us with multiple backgrounds and learning approaches. Implementing choice boards, learning menus, and HyperDocs allow our instruction to reach all students while addressing all levels. Examples, as well as templates, will be included to help you get started.
