PKB: Google Tools

Feeling like your child’s school speaks a different language? “Google Drive,” “Docs,” “Keep,” “Drawings… it can feel like a lot. If you’ve ever wondered where your child’s homework actually lives or how you’re supposed to connect with teachers online, this booster is for you.  We’ll skip the jargon and focus on the basics, treating these tools as what they are: a simple digital toolkit to help you and your child stay organized and connected.

Think of this as your friendly, 30-minute guide to the fundamentals. We’ll walk through the most important tools one by one, giving you the confidence to navigate your child’s digital school life. You’ll learn how to support their learning without having to be a tech expert.

➕ Part 1: Your Digital Hub (Drive, Gmail, and Calendar)
In this first part, we’ll tackle the “big three” of organization. We’ll learn what Google Drive is (think of it as a digital backpack) and how to use Gmail and Google Calendar to keep track of school communication and events. This matters because getting organized is the first step to feeling less overwhelmed and more in control. You’ll watch a quick video and then set up your own digital folder.

➕ Part 2: The Homework Helpers (Docs and Slides)
Now we’ll look at the tools your child will use most for homework: Google Docs (for writing) and Google Slides (for presentations). This matters because you’ll be able to understand their workflow and, most importantly, learn how to help them by “commenting” on their work instead of just editing it. We’ll watch a video and then practice that all-important commenting skill.

➕ Part 3: Creative Tools for Learning (Google Keep and Google Drawings)
In our final part, we’ll explore two powerful yet simple Google tools that can transform how your child organizes ideas and expresses creativity. We’ll show you how Google Keep helps capture thoughts and to-do lists, while Google Drawings lets your child create visual projects without expensive software. This matters because these free tools support both everyday organization and creative school projects, giving you practical ways to help your child stay on track and express their ideas visually.

🧩 What You Will Gain:

  • An understanding of what “Google Drive” is and how to think of it as your family’s “digital backpack”

  • Confidence in using Gmail and Google Calendar to communicate with the school and manage your family’s schedule

  • The ability to support your child’s homework in Google Docs and Slides (without doing it for them!)

  • A clear picture of how to use Google Keep and Drawings to tracks to-do lists and create posters or concept maps
