Coding in the Elementary Grades
The focus of this online course is to assist you in learning to code with tools and resources that are appropriate for elementary students. The purpose of the course is for you to adapt these tools and resources for your own use in the classroom. It is an introductory course intended to build your capacity for both online and offline coding with your students.
The course content explores the use of various online tools and apps and makes suggestions for best use. What’s more, it provides you with access to curated content that includes blogs, books, and videos that can extend your learning.

Self-Paced Online Course
Coding in the Elementary Grades is a self-paced, online program. Participants can begin anytime and go at their own speed throughout the program.
Upon enrollment, you will receive a program invitation email from TCEA’s learning management system (Instructure’s Canvas) that will give you access to the self-paced course. Within the course, you will find modules that must be moved through in sequential order. The modules can be found below.
|Module 1||Research||This module will focus on helpful research to support the value and implementation of coding in the elementary grades.|
|Module 2||Offline Coding Activities||In this module, you will explore a variety of offline activities that support coding and coding concepts but do not require a laptop or tablet.|
|Module 3||Online Coding Apps and Tools||In this module, various coding apps and tools that can be used by students on tablets and/or computers. Besides being given specific instruction on several of the most popular, you will have the opportunity to explore additional ones that may be lesser known but still very relevant to your students.|
|Module 4||Assessment||Assessing coding doesn’t have to be messy or confusing. In this module you will explore performance-based assessment as well as utilizing rubrics to guide student learning.|
|Module 5||Coding Across the Content Areas||Regardless of what content area you teach, you can integrate coding in very relevant ways. This module will explicitly share resources for math, science, ela, and social studies. You will also learn how to search for coding resources in case you teach a different content or want more specific, tailored resources for your students.|
